In February, Khalid Ansari – Principal Engineer for Cybersecurity at FM Approvals – contributed to the Winter 2024 edition of the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) newsletter, the UNSC Current, with the authoring of “The Scope and Success of IEC 62443 Security Standards” (page 3).
The ISA/IEC-62443 standards have been very successful in their adoption across sectors and geographical regions. Several ISA/IEC joint committees are actively working to keep these standards up-to-date in the face of evolving threats. This article highlights the standards’ components, product certification, the successful adoption of the standards in the Americas and other noteworthy regions including Malaysia, Qatar, Brazil, India, and Singapore.
Due to its popularity, requirements from ISA/IEC-62443 standards have also been mapped to other cybersecurity frameworks, such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Cybersecurity Performance Goals.
According to Ansari, “stakeholders must work together to ensure the cybersecurity of industrial automation and control systems. Specifying certified products with certain security level capabilities immensely simplifies the procurement process. It also aids in subsequent risk assessments of the facility.”
