FM Approvals Standard 5800, Oxygen Reduction Systems, was published in September 2021 and provides comprehensive testing and certification requirements for fire prevention oxygen reduction systems. An oxygen reduction system is used to displace the oxygen in an enclosed environment using nitrogen generators to reduce the oxygen concentration in the protected space that will not support fire propagation for various hazards.
Accepted nitrogen generation technologies include;
- Membranes
- Pressure swing absorption (including vacuum pressure swing absorption)
- Other methods (evaluated on a case-by-case basis)
