Product Identity: Edwards Series 280 Mechanical Heat Detectors (see the attached Edwards Safety Notice for affected model numbers and brands).

FM Approval Status: All models bearing the FM Mark. The product is now discontinued and has been removed from the FM Approval Guide.

Hazard Involved: Edwards Fire Safety has identified a product issue in certain mechanical heat detectors that could result in the detector not working as intended as they age. Edwards 280 Series mechanical heat detectors may fail to report an alarm condition within the temperature range allowed by their FM Approval listings. This could result in the detector responding at a temperature higher than the rating, or not at all.

The company is recalling the affected models. The scope of the Edwards Safety Notice covers only models with date codes after January 1, 2004 on the basis that NFPA 72 recommends that heat detectors should be replaced within fifteen years. It should be noted, however, that the product deficiency affects all date codes.

Edwards is requesting that building owners and facility managers contact a fire or security alarm professional for replacement options and to complete the remediation process. The replacement options are detailed in the attached Safety Notice.

The total number of affected units is reported to be approximately 85,000.  The situation has been reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
